Full of abysmal humor and surrealistic imagery, Ligia Lewis' work "Still Not Still" evokes a poetic theatrical language that shatters any fantasy of historical progress. If history is fallible, insufficient, and marked by gaps and absences, can it simply be consigned to the past? The image of an 8th century Black Madonna in Italy inspired her to create an evening dedicated to those left in the shadows by history: black and queer people, non-normative bodies. Inspired by a "Complainte", a lament from the French Middle Ages, Lewis and seven performers create a movement and sound score that makes it possible to experience the work of these bodies against the power structures of the majority society in a restlessness that is hardly ever interrupted. Ligia Lewis turns to the dark cavern of the theater space and negotiates the past within it in order to make another future possible. Simultaneously tragedy and comedy, the dance piece employs the playful, expressionless expressivity and dry, black comedy of "Deadpan." "Still Not Still" sketches a world outside of time in which the creative power of fictionalization is used to ferret out dark gaps and set stasis in motion.
Ligia Lewis works as a choreographer and performer. Her emotionally charged works are explicit, energetic, and poetic, moving across dance, theater, and visual arts. Her performances, touring worldwide, question the stage and the body as sites of stable representation.
