Lulu Obermayer

Choreographer, Performer

Lulu Obermayer, born in Munich in 1989, trained as an actress in New York at the Lee Strasberg Institute and Stella Adler Studio. From 2010 to 2014 she studied Contemporary Performance Practice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Dramaturgy at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, among others with Hans Thies Lehmann and Carl Hegemann. In February 2017, she completed the Master Solo Dance and Authorship at the Inter-University Center for Dance in Berlin (Universität der Künste, Hochschule für Schauspielkunst, Ernst Busch).

In January 2017, she was invited to the 30/30 Festival in Bordeaux, where she presented her solo Tosca, which she performed both in November 2016 as part of the Batard Festival at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels, and in July at the Uferstudios (Berlin), in June at the P-Bodies Festival (Leipzig) and in May at the Performing Arts Festival Berlin. In 2015 she developed the solo Female Drama/Soliloquy at the Cammerspielen Leipzig, about which she gave a lecture performance at the symposium "Performances of [Femininity]" at the University of the Arts. She also performed her solo Private Moment at HAU2 in Berlin as part of the 100°Festival and at galerie KUB in Leipzig.

In her choreographic works she deals with representations of femininity and being alone on stage. She makes use of the dramatic canon of female characters, isolating them from their narrative in order to grant them a new agency and ontological confrontation. It overlaps the emotional and theatrical apparatus using elements of opera, choreography, and performance. She develops performances in which a moment is stretched into eternity. She plays her head off for beauty on the cusp of embarrassment. In 2012, she received the Art Trust Scotland Award.

"Solo Change star Obermayer is talent to watch" (Mary Brennan, Herald Scotland).

Other performances nationally and internationally: Panolpy Performance Laboratory, Fountain Art Fair, Outlet Gallery (New York), The Arches, Glasgow International Festival, The Art School (Glasgow), blauverschiebung and Lindenow (Leipzig), Galeri Non (Istanbul), International Performance Art Festival (Switzerland), AWA Gallery (Amsterdam).
