Carolin Jüngst
Choreographer, Performer
Carolin Jüngst (sie/ihr & they/them) works as a choreographer and performer between Munich and Hamburg. Together with Lisa Rykena, her pieces are created in the duo Rykena/Jüngst in co-production with Kampnagel in Hamburg and with HochX in Munich and have also been shown at various venues and festivals, e.g. brut Wien/imagetanz Festival, Outnow Festival Bremen, Hauptsache Frei Festival Hamburg. The piece SHE LEGEND (2019/2020) was invited to the Tanzplattform 2022, which will take place at HAU/Hebbel-am-Ufer Berlin in March 2022.
She trained in acrobatics on horseback for over 10 years, studied theater/dance studies and philosophy, completed a Dance Trainee Program at Leipziger Tanztheater, and graduated with an MA Performance Studies in Hamburg in 2017. In 2019-2020 she was a fellow of the Claussen-Simon Foundation.
In her dance productions, she wanders through strip clubs, 1920s vaudeville theater, Ovid's Metamorphoses, queer comic conventions, and futuristic worlds, allowing mermaids, she-hulks, expressive arias, velvet stages, and marble down jackets to collide. Her work engages queerfeminist, intersectional, and Ableism-critical body discourses and the transformation of normative categorization of bodies. To this end, she draws on classical, mythological and pop-cultural materials and uses them to create new figures, hybrid forms and grotesque embodiments with the aim of dissolving stereotypical, clichéd and heteronormative (gender) attributions. Choreographically, she often navigates between body and voice and their possibilities to comment and question each other. She also works with various methods of performative storytelling. Her work is always about reinterpreting and recreating virtuosity, imagining and manifesting different bodies and affirming expressive, humorous and dilettante bodies.
She also works a lot with the access tool of audiodescription and its artistic potential and also works as an audio describer, mostly in the field of dance. Audiodescription is the linguistic description of visual phenomena for blind and visually impaired people and is used in various fields, including theater or film & television. By integrating audio description as an artistic tool in her pieces, it becomes a performative tool that questions the dominance of visual culture and the attributions to the body that accompany it, and expands it through a performative practice of imagination.
