Stefan Maria Marb

Dancer, Choreographer, Educator, and Psychologist

Dancer, choreographer, educator, and psychologist; member of Tanztendenz München. Trained as a contemporary dancer, Marb has performed with both national and international companies. Since 1988, he has been deeply engaged with Butoh, developed his own style, and has regularly taught Butoh in Germany and abroad. For many years, Marb has created his own choreographic works in the form of full-length stage productions, dance performances, and performance cycles.

His solo Men of Good Fortune won first prize at the choreographers’ competition in Hanover. In 2004, he created Golem Part II, which was nominated for the Slovenian Dance Award. Together with choreographer Tanja Zgonc, Marb brought the full-length duet Betweeen to the stage in 2008, which toured to Ljubljana and Tokyo. He then developed the site-specific choreographic project Nevada_Body in the United States and later presented it as an interdisciplinary project at whiteBOX Munich. In 2016, he created his anthology Welten.Tänzer, in which he collaborated intensively with visual artists.

With his annual Butoh workshop, a performative teaching format, he presented the performance Pygmalions Sehnsucht at the Munich Glyptothek in 2018. In the same year, he showed APRES- eine Verwandlung at Munich’s Gasteig, a comprehensive retrospective of his artistic oeuvre from the previous 30 years. After a creative break, he developed the stage production Lazarus-a white shadow with renowned musicians at Einstein Kultur Munich. Most recently, he presented the outdoor performance The Green Man at Villa Waldberta in collaboration with British composer Nick Parkin.
